Add 200 participants from 30 different countries and you’ve got the perfect storm to have something go horribly wrong. But, whether we sacrificed enough wine in our lives to appease Bacchus, or whether we magically entered a vortex of fluidity, we’ll never know, but we couldn’t be happier with the results. And with any luck, you’ve walked away with an incredible perspective of how an international community of wine content creators can jointly manifest together: friendship, networking, business, and of course, fun!

With that, allow Ryan, Robert and myself to deeply and humbly thank you all for joining us in Vienna; whereby, making the EWBC the incredibly unique and special event it is. Without your support, and your belief in us, this wouldn’t have run nearly as smoothly as it did. So with that…thank you!!

Additionally, we want to thank our sponsors who graciously made the event a reality! Without them, your Gruner would have turned into tap water at a blink of an eye. So to the Austrian Wine Marketing Board, our long list of sponsors and contributors, thank you! And a deep and hearty thank you to the wineries who graced us with their incredible wines, not to mention your time.

That said, we are not the ones to tell the story, it’s you, the participants, who should. You are the ones who came to learn and taste your way through 3+ days of wine and seminars, and it’s your voices that matter. So while we’ll add a few links below from groups and places around the web where you can read more, what we need is for you to share your story. Send us links in the comments below to your posts and stories, and please tag all your articles with both: #EWBC and #EWBC10 so that others can find them. If your on Delicious.com also tag them there! We have a nice archive growing!

Additionally, please remember that you now have 2 wine blogger conferences to register for! The first is in Virgina this July 22-24, 2011, where you can explore the amazing and delicious wines of the Eastern seaboard of the USA!!! Very exciting! We really want more international bloggers to participate this year, so please consider registering to meet other dynamic bloggers in the USA! Register HERE!

Then you have Brescia, Italy, in October, where you can taste wines from across the big boot! Register HERE!

Organizer’s note: The Austrian Wine Adventure Tour is a series of articles, videos, and webinars about adventures in Austrian wine country. Julia Sevenich gives an insider’s view of the best wine places to go, the juiciest insider secrets, and just who is shakin’ and makin’ the dynamic Austrian wine scene.

Between now and the EWBC 2010, 9 articles and 7 videos are scheduled to appear. The Austrian Wine Adventure Tour will be featured exclusively on Haidu.net. During the EWBC you will be able to locate wine bars and wine dining places recommended by Julia on the Haidu iphone app as well as many of the wineries that will be presenting their wines at the conference and on the conference trips.

First up…Weinvertel DAC!

“There is a rather endearing curse in the German language. When you are frustrated with someone and want to send them to the end of the world, you tell them to go ‘where the pepper grows’,” laughs Marion Ebner-Ebenauer. “I used to think that meant somewhere far away and isolated like Africa, Madagascar, or the most rural parts of the Weinviertel. But now with the international success of our peppery Grüner Veltliner under the geographic label of origin ‘Weinviertel DAC’, the place where ‘the pepper grows’ has gained a pleasant second meaning.”

Marion is giving us a tour of the Weinviertel in her vintage VW beetle and I am impressed that this old red convertible successfully climbs each vineyard slope without a sputter! We are just past the borders of Vienna touring vineyards of Langenzersdorf, Bisamberg und Hagenbrunn. We refresh ourselves along the way with typical heuriger fare of various salads and bread with different delicious spreads as well as the region’s famous Marchfeld asparagus. The Weinviertel is the bread basket of Austria. Most of the country’s grains are grown here and it is also a primary source of fresh vegetables for the nation’s capitol city. Austria’s heuriger culture was born when a sanction passed by Emperor Franz-Josef II in 1784 allowed farmers to sell their produce and products directly to consumers and this culture of rustic wine taverns continues to thrive.

But after 2 day of intense workshops and sessions, we’ve made it a tradition to head out and explore the vineyards. This year is no different. Come Sunday, we’ll hop on 1 of 3 buses to go explore the countryside – to see, touch, feel and smell the land from which the wines you’ve been savoring have come from. A well rounded experience is far from complete if you, as a wine lover, can’t chat with the winemaker while standing in the heart of their vineyards with a glass of their wine in hand. Isn’t this why we all fell in love with wine in the first place?

The trips will leave first thing on Sunday, October 24th from the lobby of the Renaissance Wein Hotel and return by 5pm, allowing those participants with an evening flight to catch it.

In late September, early November, we’ll send out a questionnaire that will allow you to choose with trip you would like to participate in, but in the meantime, take a moment to peruse the list of fabulous options below!

Austrian Wines Along the Danube River
Then, continue along the Danube to find out more about one of Austria’s most up and coming regions, the Wagram. At the last stop, you get to taste wines from the regions of Thermenregion and Carnuntum in the beautiful monastery of Stift Klosterneuburg.

Like the Douro Boys trip last year in the Douro Valley, we’ll have 2 amazing all-expense paid trips that will allow you to explore the vast and gorgeous wine regions of Austria. Both trips can host up to 30 participants, but you must be registered for the EWBC to sign-up for either trip.

Please note that there may also be opportunities for pre-trips outside of Austria. However, we unfortunately will not have this information for you until mid-August.

Post EWBC Trip the Danube: Kremstal DAC, Kamptal DAC and Traisental DAC
Monday, Oct 25th, 8:30 am – Tuesday, Oct 26th, 5:00 pm

This trip will show you Austria’s new origin-typical wines: Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from the Kremstal, Kamptal and Traisental DAC-regions. The first day will begin at the beautiful Stift Göttweig monastery, where you will be given an overview of the regions and their wine archetypes. This will be followed by a tasting of Kremstal DAC wines. Then, in the romantic region of Traisental, you can taste freshly picked grapes and see how they are processed. In addition, a tasting of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling musts in different stages of fermentation will help you learn more about these varieties before you taste Traisental DAC wines. The next day will feature a visit to the Kamptal, where you can participate in a harvest at the Heiligenstein, the most famous single vineyard of the region. Afterwards, Kamptal DAC wines will be waiting for you in the famous wine museum, Loisium. If time permits, a quick stroll through the museum can be taken before the return trip to Vienna.

SOLD OUT!

Post EWBC Trip Burgenland: Leithaberg DAC, Mittelburgenland DAC, Eisenberg DAC
Monday, Oct 25th, 8:30 am – Tuesday, Oct 26th, 5:00 pm

The Pannonian Plains of Hungary meet the last foothills of the Alps on Lake Neusiedl
in Burgenland. Just as the landscape is diverse and stunning – so also are the wines of Burgenland. These encompass not only the dry, mineral, vibrantly structured white wines from the slopes of the Leithaberg, but also exquisite sweet wines from the shores of Lake Neusiedl. Burgenland is also Austria’s predominant source for superb red wines, in particular from the indigenous Blaufränkisch variety. On this trip you will have the chance to compare the inimitable terroirs of the Burgenland appellations Leithaberg DAC, Mittelburgenland DAC, and Eisenberg DAC. You will encounter state-of-the-art winery architecture and meet numerous vintners. Because there is no end to food pairing options with the wines of Burgenland, you will have a chance to experience this versatility with a hearty, rustic meal in regional wine tavern as well as in a fine restaurant with haute cuisine. More exact details for this trip will follow mid-August.

This past week, we hosted a social media and blogging stand called, “The Access Zone” at the London International Wine Fair. 60 square meters dedicated to sessions on Facebook for Business, Blogging 101, Social Media Wine Tastings, Wine Fault Tastings and so much more.

And in light of our mission to spread the good word about Social Media, we decided to kick off the 2010 EWBC with a tasting of Austrian Wines spearheaded by Willi Klinger, President of the Austrian Wine Marketing Board. Have fun watching the film, and don’t forget that we’re still looking for people interested in proposing a seminar or workshop at this year’s conference!

Next week, Monday 15th to Wednesday 17th, Gabriella, Ryan & Robert are heading for Vienna.

Our main task is to decide on a conference venue for EWBC 2010. So much of the rest of our organisation depends on sorting out this detail that we are making it our top priority. Vienna is full of gorgeous palaces and historic buildings, but it seems that the original architects and builders failed to take into account the needs of 150 21st Century wine bloggers for conference spaces, power points and WiFi … so a little inventive sleuthing is required.

We have a number of interesting prospects already sorted out, so we will report back as we visit our favourites. (Photo from Wikipedia)

However, all work and no wine, does not make these EWBC organisers happy, so we also planning some friendly meetings, interviews and lots of general enjoyment of Viennese hospitality. As well as an exciting planning meeting with our hosts, Wines from Austria, and some potentially superb sponsors, we would like to hook up with local wine bloggers to get to know more about the Austrian ‘scene’.

Therefore, we’ve reserved a table at Gmoakeller for Tuesday, March 16, at 7.30pm, under the name “Wine Blogger”. Any blogger that would like to join us are more than welcome, but please rsvp below.

Looking forward to sharing exciting feedback on Vienna very soon.
